Carbon Neutral Factory
Our production Factory has measured their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduced them to net zero through internal change and externally, through carbon offsetting in accordance with the requirements of the Carbon Neutral Protocol1 for our type of activity.

An emissions assessment/audit has been undertaken by an independent third party in accordance with the WBCSD-WRI GHG Protocol2.

Emissions reduced through carbon offsetting: 126 tonnes CO2e

1) Sebenoba-Karakurt wind power project, Turkey, VCS (90t CO2e)

2) Sichuan province hydro power project, China, CDM (36t CO2e)

Organic Cotton
The ORGANIC COTTON is a stock collection of the highest quality garments produced in 100% pure organically grown cotton. It is is certified by the Control Union World Group, to the Organic Exchange 100 guidelines and the Skal International standards for sustainable textile production, which verify conformity with the organic regulations of Europe, Japan and the United States.

There is both undyed and dyed organic cotton items, and to achieve organic certification, only azo-free dyes that meet the requirements of the Global Organic Standard are used in the dyeing process; the Oeko-Tex Standard certification comprehensively addresses these issues.
Why Bamboo?
Bamboo is not a tree—it’s a grass, and it grows like one. Many species of bamboo can grow two feet or more a day. When it’s harvested, it need not be replanted, because it will grow a new shoot from its extensive root system, often 4 to 5 new shoots. It renews itself readily, unlike hardwood trees, which, once cut, are gone forever. Canadian Maple trees take around 40-60 years to mature before they can be cut down.  Bamboo is an endless renewable resource. Farmed bamboo stabilizes the earth with its roots, preventing erosion. It takes in greenhouse gasses and produces oxygen. In fact 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. It can also provide habitat for birds and animals (though our bamboo is not preferred by pandas, and is therefore panda-safe).  In nature, bamboo filters heavy metals from groundwater and removes four times more carbon dioxide from the air than an equivalent-size stand of trees. This is why we have our skatedecks made from 70% Bamboo...
Sutsu Commitments
Although we currently cannot provide all Sutsu garments as either Organic or Recycled we are aiming to by the end of 2011. All our garments are made with consideration of our actions in respect of the environment and society. Therefore as this page explains we aim to make as little impact on the environment as possible but without comprimising either the style or quality of the garments. No matter how much we clean up our act, we are still polluters, we must account for our actions so to offer some positive response to this we give support to environmental groups close to our heart, currently Woodland Friends, Beach Clean Network and Bica Surf Club.

We aim to know the consequences of our actions. Much of the damage to the environment is done either unintentionally, through ignorance, or by willfully ignoring the chain of decisions that lead to bad results, therefore we aim to lead an examined life.
